Caspar David Friedrich was a German painter, graphic artist and draftsman. He is one of the most important artists of German Romanticism. His themes and motifs are landscapes, religion, loneliness, the idea of the afterlife and the hope of redemption. The paintings are characterized by a special melancholy. This is also the case with his work The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog , which is one of his most famous works. It is often used as a symbol of Romanticism.
