Asterix - The new movie

After a long time of waiting, you can see the new adventure of the Gauls "The Secret of the Magic Potion" in the cinemas.

Wenn ich daran denke, daß "Asterix" in 72 Sprachen übersetzt wurde, und ich spreche nur eine einzige, da bekomme ich doch richtige Komplexe.

Albert Uderzo, Asterix' Erfolg

Asterix – By Teutates! These Romans are crazy!

We have had to wait a long time but now it's finally time and the new film "Asterix and the mystery of the magic potion" is in the cinemas.

For a short overview: The movie is about Getafix (the magic potion making druid). He knows he gets older and after a bad fall from a tree he thinks about what would happen if he is incapacitated someday. So he sets off to scour Gaul for a talented druid to pass on the secret of the magic potion with Asterix and Obelix by his side.

Who doesn’t know them? The short, clever warrior with the magic potion bottle on the belt, the not-fat-wild-boar-lover with a little dog, the white and wise druid and all other characters which were created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo – who celebrated his 90th birthday in 2017.

In 1959 the very first part of the probably most successful French comic series – “Astérix” was published. With decent allusions on history and art, caricature illustrations of big personalities and humor running gags it put a spell on many people in different ages and social classes.

So you can find for example positions of the famous sculptures “the discus thrower” by Myron or “the thinker” by Rodin in the part Asterix and the Laurel Wreath. One time you see the “Mona Lisa” in a window in Italy and in Asterix and the Great Crossing Asterix looks like the Statue of Liberty for a moment.

Many little things come together in these comics and create a world of their own far away from our time period. Even around 50 B.C. New things are used for humorous situations while reading. Stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Beatles or 007 (James Bond) have their own character in the stories. There are also scenes which remind on Wilhelm Tell or Romeo and Juliet in the creations by Goscinny und Uderzo.

There is one activity you can find in all parts of the comic series. Gauls fight against Romans. And sometimes the Gauls battle among each other because they can’t destroy the same quantity of Roman armaments.

All in all the authors show us the prejudices of the French people adverse to other countries. They both were not French so all the prejudices attracted their attention. As an example: British people drink a hot cup of tea with milk at 5 o’clock on the dot every day (in the Asterix-comics they drink hot water with milk before Asterix brought the tea leafs to Britain).
